DAILY CATTLE MARKET BRIEFING
May 23, 2026

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

## 1. MARKET SENTIMENT: BEARISH — 3/10

Futures markets are in full retreat. Feeder cattle hit limit down Thursday, live cattle futures collapsed, and cash markets followed. The combination of a bearish COF report, packer losses, soft box prices, and demand uncertainty heading into Memorial Day weekend has created a deeply negative near-term backdrop. The only offsetting factors are tight cattle supplies and improving export market access — neither of which is moving prices right now.

## 2. KEY PRICE TRENDS

**Fed Cattle (Cash):**
- Live sales dropped sharply from $264–$265 early week to mostly **$260**, with some northern sales at **$258**
- Dressed sales fell from $415 to **$410–$412**

**Futures (CME):**
- August live cattle crashed **5.950 cents** Thursday to **239.350 cents/lb**
- August feeder cattle closed **limit down**, off 9.250 cents to **356.525 cents/lb**
- June live cattle closed Wednesday at **253.275 cents/lb** (–1.275)

**Feeder Cash Index:** Still holding above **$370**, creating a $25–$30 discount in summer feeder futures — a spread that makes feedlot economics deeply negative (estimated –$150/head when extended to finish weights)

**Box Prices:** Softened late week. Choice re-established a premium over Select after an extended period of Select trading at a premium.

**Carcass Data:** Weights at **955 lbs** (up 2 lbs week-over-week, up 42 lbs year-over-year — record territory). Quality grade at **89.4%**, up 0.8% week-over-week.

**Weekly Slaughter:** 535,000 head — 8,000 over prior week, **31,000 under last year**.

**April Slaughter (USDA Monthly):** Cattle slaughter down **9% year-over-year** at 2.34 million head. Beef production down **6%** to 2.10 billion pounds. YTD beef production down **6%** from 2025.

## 3. TOP 3 NEW DEVELOPMENTS

### 🔴 #1 — COF Report Shocks Market: Placements Up 6%, Marketings Down 10%
The May 22 USDA Cattle on Feed report delivered a significant bearish surprise:
- **On Feed (May 1):** 11.6 million head, **+2% YoY**
- **April Placements:** 1.70 million head, **+6% YoY** — nearly double the pre-release analyst estimate of +3.4%, raising questions about potential market leaks given feeder futures had already sold off sharply in the two prior sessions
- **April Marketings:** 1.64 million head, **–10% YoY** — feedlots are holding cattle, waiting for better bids from packers who are themselves losing money

The placement surge is being attributed to worsening Plains drought pushing cattle into feedlots earlier than expected, combined with strong feeder prices incentivizing liquidation. **62% of the U.S. cattle inventory is currently in a drought-affected area**, compared to 29% a year ago.
