About Herd Advisor

Built by a lifelong rancher and software founder, Herd Advisor combines practical experience with powerful data to give producers a clearer view of the market ahead.

Our first product, the Cattle Market Forecast, predicts calf prices for the next four weeks at more than 250 livestock auctions — helping ranchers decide when and where to sell, and how best to prepare their calves for market.

At its core, Herd Advisor is about partnership — bringing the tools, insights, and clarity ranchers need to grow the health and profitability of their operations for years to come.

Purpose & Origin

I grew up on a small cattle ranch, and as soon as I could, I started building my own herd. Like most cow/calf producers, each year I sell my calves through local livestock auctions. And every time I haul a trailer full of calves to town, I find myself asking the same two questions: Should I have sold this week, or would next week have been better? And was this the right auction, or could I have gotten a stronger price somewhere else?

Too often, I'd watch the market move the wrong way right after I sold — prices jumping the next week or dipping just when I finally decided to wait. That frustration made me realize how difficult it is for ranchers to make marketing decisions with confidence.

The problem isn't a lack of data; it's that the data we have isn't built for ranchers trying to make forward-looking decisions. Most tools show what prices were, not what they're likely to be. They focus on national averages or a single representative calf weight — not the real mix of animals we sell or the regional differences that drive the true market. Comparing auctions is just as messy: one might report "416 lb steers," another "425–486," and another something entirely different.

As a rancher and a software founder, I've seen firsthand how good data can transform decision-making. That's what led me to create Herd Advisor — to bring predictive insights and clear, harmonized data to the people who raise America's cattle.
