Record calving, including twins

Getting your cattle in

Add an animalAdd a single animal with its tag, sex, breed, birth date, parents and registration number.

Add as much or as little as you want. A tag number alone is a record, or keep the whole story: breed, color, birth date, dam and sire, pasture, EID, notes and more. You can even add one by voice, including what you paid and who you bought her from. Works offline on the phone.

Why it matters: Every animal has its own record from day one, so nothing lives only in your head or a pocket notebook.

Hey Siri, cattle record with Herd Advisor. Then: "Bought a 6-year-old Angus cow from the Smith sale for $1,800, put her in the front pasture."

Import animals and records from a spreadsheetBring in animals, weights, treatments, breeding and sales from an Excel or CSV file (up to 10,000 rows) or pasted rows, on the web.

Bring your old herd book in from Excel or CSV, or the download from another herd program. Cows come in with dam and sire linked, along with weights, calving records and treatments. Only have it on paper? Take pictures of your herd book and send them to us, and we'll load it for you, free.

Why it matters: Years of records you already have come with you, so you start with your history, not a blank page.

Records, Complete and Complete + AI

Add external sires and donor damsKeep a record of outside bulls and donors so calves can be tied to them.

Add the AI bull you used, or a borrowed or leased bull, as an external sire so his calves show a real sire and you can judge them in the Sires report. External animals don't count in your herd totals.

Why it matters: Calves are tied to their real sire and dam, even when you never owned them.

Records, Complete and Complete + AI

Add photos and documentsKeep photos, registration papers and health certificates with each animal.

Snap a photo of each cow with your phone and make it her cover photo, then keep purchase receipts, insurance photos and vet papers on her record too.

Why it matters: Every animal has its own photo, so you know exactly which cow you're looking at, and her papers are right there when a buyer or vet asks.

Breeding and calving

Record calving, including twinsRecord each calf with its dam, sire, birth weight and calving ease, including twins and calves you haven't tagged yet.

Add as much or as little as you want. A dam and a birth date alone is a calving, or record the whole story: birth weight, calving ease, sex, color and twins or up to 10 calves on one calving. If you don't tag your calves at birth, we make recording the calving, and the tag later, really easy: the calf gets a temporary tag like CALF-52-20261028, made from the dam's tag and the birth date, so it's easy to find and match up when you tag it. The sire fills in on its own from the bulls she was with. Calving ease from 1 to 5 shows which cows and bulls cause pulls, and a calf that's stillborn or dies at birth still gets a record.

Why it matters: Every calf is tied to its dam and sire from birth, which is what calving intervals, sire reports and sale history are built on.

Hey Siri, cattle record with Herd Advisor. Then: "Cow 52 had a bull calf this morning, about 80 pounds."

Bull exposure and calving windows, created automaticallyMove a bull in with the cows and each cow gets an exposure window and an expected calving date on her own. Move him out and the window closes. You can also enter exposure or breeding by hand.

Move the bull in with the cows and each cow gets an exposure window and an expected calving date, with no breeding book. Move him out and the window closes. With two or more bulls in, each calf lists the bulls that could have sired it. Open and overdue cows show up on your dashboard. Leave your bull in year-round? We'll set each cow's exposure window automatically from her last calf, so you can still see which cows are running late.

Why it matters: Open cows and cows calving late are reported right in the app, so you can manage each cow without keeping a breeding book.

Records, Complete and Complete + AI

Record AI breedingRecord each AI breeding with the sire and date. Pick the sire from your semen inventory, or set him up as an external sire. You don't need to keep a semen inventory.

Record AI on up to 500 cows at once; each cow gets an expected calving date 283 days out and a calving reminder.

Why it matters: You know exactly which sire each cow was bred to, and when to expect her calf.

Record embryo transferRecord each embryo placed in a recipient cow with the donor, sire and date. Pick the embryo from your inventory, or type in the donor and sire. You don't need to keep an embryo inventory.

Web and mobile: Cattle Record Guide, Animals, open the animal, Create Record, then pick Breeding, New Breeding, then ET.

Why it matters: Each recipient is tied to the donor and sire of the embryo she carries, so her calf's papers are right.

Records, Complete and Complete + AI

Track your semen and embryo inventoryTrack the straws and embryos you hold.

Track straws and embryos by sire, donor, tank and canister. Each AI breeding or embryo transfer that uses your inventory takes it off your count. Any lot down to 5 straws or 2 embryos is flagged as low stock.

Why it matters: You always know what straws and embryos you have on hand before breeding season.

Records, Complete and Complete + AI; turned on per farm (Farm settings), and switched on automatically the first time a farm records an embryo or straw.

See which cows are due to calveCows due in the next 30 days and any that are overdue. Also a dashboard tile.

See which cows are due in the next 30 days and which are overdue, so you know who to watch through calving season. A dashboard tile shows how many are due.

Why it matters: You know who to watch, and who is overdue, without flipping through a calving book.

Records, Complete and Complete + AI

See how many calves you haveThe calves you have right now, born and bought.

A count of every calf on hand under 12 months old, born and bought, with the steer, heifer and bull split, how many are in each pasture and average age in months. Switch to calves born on your farm to see one year's calf crop.

Why it matters: A true count of the calf crop, born and bought, any day of the year.

Records, Complete and Complete + AI

Move calves to adult at 12 months automaticallyEvery night the app moves animals that turned 12 months from calf to adult. It is on by default, and you can turn it off.

Calves move to adult once they turn 12 months, heifers, bulls and steers alike, so your counts stay right without updating each yearling by hand. One setting covers every farm you own.

Why it matters: Your counts and reports stay right without updating each yearling by hand.

Working your cattle

Bulk edit and add recordsRecord for a whole farm, pasture or group at once, or just the animals you tick.

Pick the animals, then stack up as many records as you need (treatments, weaning, moves, sales, breeding and preg checks) and save them all to every animal in one bulk edit.

Why it matters: Processing day takes one entry for the whole bunch, not one per head.

Records, Complete and Complete + AI

Record weights and track growthRecord weights and body condition scores, and Herd Advisor tracks growth for each animal, each cow's calves, each sire and the whole herd.

Every weigh-in adds to the animal's weight history and average daily gain. Herd Advisor works out each calf's 205-day adjusted weaning weight for you, shows each cow's calf weaning weights over the years and her last calf as a percent of her own weight, and charts weaning weight trends for the herd by year. On the Sires report, compare sires by average weaning weight and growth curves.

See weaning weights, figured automaticallyHerd Advisor works out each calf's 205-day adjusted weaning weight for you, and projects one for calves too young to wean.

Herd Advisor takes whichever weigh-in is closest to 205 days of age, anywhere from 120 to 280 days, adjusts it to 205 days and charts the herd's weaning weights by year. For calves 30 to 120 days old with a birth weight, it projects where they are headed at weaning.

Why it matters: You compare calves on the same 205-day footing, even when they were weighed at different ages.

Record treatments, medications and withdrawal datesKeep an accurate record of every treatment given: what each animal was treated with, how much and when, with withdrawal dates worked out for you.

Record the product, dose, route and lot number. Herd Advisor sets the withdrawal date, using the route when the product's withdrawal differs by route, and adds a withdrawal reminder. Treat a whole group at once with bulk edit or by voice.

Why it matters: You know who got what and when it is safe to ship.

Start from ready protocols like 2-3 Month Calf Shots, Pre-Weaning Boosters, Heifer Pre-Breeding, Bull BSE Prep, Pre-Calving Scour Prevention, Fall Processing and Fly Control Season Start, or build your own with your products, doses and routes. Set each protocol by age, life stage, season or when you buy new animals, for the sexes you choose. Herd Advisor shows who is due or overdue, lets you treat one animal or the whole due list in one pass, with bulk edit or from your chute mode plan, and checks each animal off as you record it.

Why it matters: Your shots and treatments follow the plan you set once, so nothing depends on memory or a wall calendar.

Moving and grazing

Move cattle between farms and pasturesMove animals between pastures and farms, and your moves build your breeding windows and pasture grazing reports for you.

Move bulls in with the cows and Herd Advisor opens the exposure window for breeding, then closes it when you move them out. Every move also feeds the pasture reports, so you see how many grazing days each pasture has given you and its stocking rate. Move one animal, a group or a whole pasture at once, by voice, with bulk edit or from a scanned EID tag.

Why it matters: You always know where every animal is, without keeping a separate breeding or grazing log.

See who's in each pastureTap a pasture on your Animals list and see every animal in it, with head counts for adults and calves and for cows, bulls, heifers and steers.

Each pasture has its own quick filter on the Animals list, so one tap shows the cows, calves and bulls in that pasture. Narrow it to adults or calves, then to cows, bulls, heifers or steers, and the counts follow. From there you can work them, move them or bulk edit the whole bunch.

Why it matters: You know who is in each pasture without driving out to look.

Records, Complete and Complete + AI

Take a pasture roll callFind out which animals are in a pasture and exactly which ones are missing, by saying or tapping the tags you see.

Walk or drive the pasture and say each tag out loud on your phone, or tap or type it. Herd Advisor checks each one off, so you can see who is there and who is still missing, and it flags any animal that belongs in another pasture.

Why it matters: When your count comes up one short, you know which one to go look for.

Each animal's page holds its photos, parents and pedigree, registration and EPDs, every calf a cow has had with calving ease flagged, her calves' weaning weights charted over the years, and weights and growth, with registry ancestors shown even when you do not own them. The whole history timeline shows every record for that animal. Filter it to just treatments, weights, notes, breeding or calving, and open and fix any record right from the timeline.

The Current Calves report compares this year's calves with the last 5 years: when they came by month, birth and weaning weights, average daily gain and how many you lost. It also shows the steer and heifer split, calves by pasture and any calf with no dam on record, which you can fix right there.

Why it matters: You see whether your calf crop is getting better year over year, and what to change if it is not.

See how your cows are performingUnderstand how every cow is performing and where each one is in her breeding and calving cycle.

The Cow Herd report shows where every cow is in her cycle: recovery after calving, breeding, early, mid or late pregnancy, or due soon. Herd Advisor works this out for you from her calving, breeding and preg check records, and from bull exposure and expected pregnancies when she has not been checked. Tap a stage to filter the cow list to just those cows, or filter by calving season. The report also shows each cow's calving interval, when she should calve next and how old the cow herd is. It ranks every cow from top performer to needs attention by the calves she has sold and the money she has brought in.

See which bulls are earning their keepSee which bulls are siring your best calves, so you know who to keep, add or replace.

The Sires report ranks every bull by how his calves perform, with a performance index built from their daily gain, weaning weight and yearling weight. For each bull it shows how many calves he sired and cows he covered, his calves' birth and weaning weights and their growth curves, plus your bull count, bull ages and bull-to-cow ratio.

Why it matters: You keep the bulls whose calves wean heavy and replace the ones that are not working.

Records, Complete and Complete + AI

See your herd's health and treatmentsRun your whole health program from one report: set up your protocols, see who is due and who is on withdrawal, and find the animals that have never had antibiotics.

The Health and Treatments report is where you set up your treatment protocols and see them work: which animals are due or overdue for each one, who is still on withdrawal and the day each clears, and what was treated in the last 90 days. One tap filters the herd to antibiotic-free animals, the ones with no medications ever recorded, so you can pull a set of never-treated calves for a natural or premium sale.

Why it matters: You know who is safe to ship, who needs shots this week and which calves qualify as never treated, without digging through treatment records.

See how hard each pasture has been grazedSee how much grazing each pasture has given you, so you know which ones are carrying the load and which have room to rest.

The Pastures report is built from your moves: each pasture's head count, grazing days and stocking rate over the last 30 days, 90 days, 12 months or any dates you choose. Enter a pasture's acres and the stocking rate shows in animal units per acre, based on USDA NRCS animal unit standards.

Why it matters: You decide where to move cattle next and which pastures to rest, based on how hard each one was actually grazed.

EPD comparisonPuts bulls, cows or calves side by side on their EPDs from the breed registry, so you can pick which to buy, keep as replacements or breed.

Look up a registration number and Herd Advisor pulls the animal's EPDs straight from most major breed registries, or paste or type them in. Then compare up to 10 animals on the web or 6 on the phone, each EPD with its accuracy. Angus, Red Angus, Hereford and Brangus animals also get a Top N% breed rank, bulls show a breeding soundness badge, and you can export the comparison to CSV.

Why it matters: You pick bulls, replacement heifers and matings on the EPDs that matter to your herd, with accuracy and rank shown next to each value.

Selling, losses and sending records

Record sales with price, weight and buyerLog each sale with its date, weight, price and buyer, so sold animals leave your herd and the money lands in your books automatically.

Enter the sale date and weight, price it per head, per pound, per cwt or as one lot total, and add the buyer and sale location. The animal is marked Sold and leaves your active herd. Selling a whole group works the same way through bulk edit. Each calf sale counts toward its mother in the Cow Productivity report, so you can see which cows raise your best paying calves. In the Cattle Money Guide, the sale posts as income, split across the animals sold. You can itemize the sale barn deductions there: commission, yardage, insurance, beef checkoff, brand inspection, hauling and vet at sale. You see gross, total deductions and net proceeds before you save, and the deductions post as expenses.

Why it matters: One entry records the sale and posts the income to the Cattle Money Guide, so your herd and your books always agree.
