DAILY CATTLE MARKET BRIEFING
July 22, 2026

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

1. MARKET SENTIMENT: BEARISH (3/10)

After a brutal 15-session losing streak in live cattle futures — the longest skid in recent memory — Monday brought a modest technical bounce, but the underlying fundamentals remain shaky. Cash cattle have fallen $20+ cwt in under a month, packers have regained clear leverage, and managed money is unwinding long positions built during three years of bull-market momentum. While tight fed cattle supplies still provide a longer-term floor, the near-term mood among cattle owners is described by market analysts as "demoralized," with little evidence yet of a durable cash-market floor. This is not a supply-driven downturn — it's a confidence and demand-driven correction, which makes near-term direction hard to call.

2. KEY PRICE TRENDS

• Cash fed cattle: Northern live sales fell from $240 to $235 last week; Southern sales settled mainly $237-$238, down $8-$13 week over week. Dressed sales dropped from a midweek high of $385 to $370-$380, down $8-$20.

• Futures: August live cattle hit a four-month low of 223.700 before rebounding to settle 226.525 cents Monday (+2.10). October live cattle also bounced off its lowest levels since December 2025. August feeder cattle rallied 6.05 cents to 352.00.

• Boxed beef: Choice cutout firmed to $370.10/cwt Monday (+$3.29), though still below year-ago levels after last week's $12 decline. Choice-select spread has narrowed sharply to $11.26 from $18.06 the prior week.

• Feeder/replacement cattle: Oklahoma City feeder steers/heifers were 15.00-25.00 lower; calves fell 20.00-30.00, with spots down $40. Hot, dry conditions and futures weakness are dragging down calf demand despite CME's Monday rally.

• Packer margins: Packers lost $275.20/head Monday, an improvement from Friday's $301.25/head loss — still deeply negative but recovering as cash softens faster than boxed beef.

• Carcass weights: Now at 951 lbs, up 13 lbs week-over-week and 36 lbs above last year — a bearish supply offset that's helping cushion tight cattle numbers.

3. TOP 3 NEW DEVELOPMENTS

1. FIFTEEN-SESSION LOSING STREAK ENDS, BUT DAMAGE IS DONE: Live cattle futures broke a historic skid Monday with a modest bounce, but the streak erased over $20/cwt in value since late June. Feedlot breakevens near $250 mean closeout losses are now starting to post, with further deterioration expected if futures forecasts hold. Analysts increasingly describe this as a potential end to the three-year bull run rather than a routine correction.

2. USDA DATA ERROR ROCKED EXPORT SENTIMENT: A massive USDA-FAS reporting mistake (reporting kilograms as metric tons) temporarily inflated weekly beef export figures by roughly 100x for Chile and Italy. The correction — from a reported 126,062 MT down to just 12,064 MT for the week ending June 25 — forced trader repositioning and added to cattle futures' downside momentum during the losing streak.

3. TRADE & TARIFF SHIFTS RESHAPING SUPPLY: Brazilian beef will be exempt from new 25% retaliatory tariffs (effective July 22) due to domestic beef shortages, even as Brazil's own beef exports face their first year-over-year monthly decline since January 2025 (China quota exhaustion cutting flows ~10%). Meanwhile, U.S. beef imports remain up nearly 10% year-to-date, with Mexico's import volume up 27% as fewer live Mexican cattle cross the border in favor of boxed beef.

4. OUTLOOK

Ranchers should brace for continued cash-market pressure in the near term. Packers have the upper hand, show lists are shrinking, and triple-digit heat is suppressing both cattle performance and consumer beef demand simultaneously. Friday's USDA Cattle-on-Feed report, Cold Storage report, and the Semiannual Cattle Inventory report will be the week's pivotal data points — watch especially for signs of heifer retention trends, since dairy-cross placements are currently masking true herd-rebuilding progress.

Feeder and replacement cattle markets are catching up to the fed cattle slide, with sharp double-digit drops already hitting Oklahoma City calves. Expect this filtering effect to intensify as backed-up market-ready cattle work through the pipeline. Retailers won't meaningfully re-engage on beef purchasing until school-lunch and Labor Day buying begins in a few weeks, meaning any near-term demand relief is still weeks away.

Longer term, fundamentals (record-low replacement heifer inventories, still-tight fed supplies, a 17% drop in beef cow slaughter) argue for support once the current liquidation and demand lull pass. But equity built over the boom years is now at risk, margin calls are likely, and even well-hedged operations may see today's favorable basis levels erode as the market searches for a new sustainable price floor. Patience and tight cost control are the watchwords this week.
