DAILY CATTLE MARKET BRIEFING
August 11, 2026

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

1. MARKET SENTIMENT: MODERATELY BULLISH (7/10)

The fundamental supply picture remains supportive — tight fed cattle numbers, record carcass weights offsetting slaughter declines, and strong beef demand heading into Labor Day. However, fragility is building beneath the surface. Futures markets are increasingly disconnected from cash and feeder indices, and multiple analysts note that many current close-outs are posting losses due to elevated replacement costs. Cash fundamentals say "bullish," but structural stress in feeding/processing margins and volatile outside news (jobs data, trade, disease) argue for caution. Net: still a seller's market for fed cattle, but no longer a one-way bet.

2. KEY PRICE TRENDS

• Fed Cattle: 5-Area steers averaged $235.21 live (up from $233.06 the prior week) and $371.11 dressed — both still trailing last year's $242.01/$381.25. Northern live sales this week ranged $235-$238, dressed $370-$380, with dressed prices $5-10 higher than the previous week as packers scrambled to cover short-bought positions ahead of Labor Day demand.

• Boxed Beef: Choice cutout firmed late in the week ($364.22-$366.51/cwt), with Select also gaining. Choice-Select spread narrowed to $18.28, reflecting tightening quality supply relative to last year's $24.12 spread. Seasonal August strength is historically typical, though cutout values remain below year-ago levels.

• Feeder Cattle: Cash prices moved higher across the board. Nebraska 700-800 lb steers jumped to $397.13 (from $378.37 a year ago); Oklahoma 500-600 lb steers hit $432.63. CME August feeder futures rose 3.6 cents to 351.65 cents/lb on Friday. Extreme heat has curtailed receipts, tightening replacement supplies and pushing buyers into competitive bidding — even though many buyers still believe current price levels are running about $100/cwt too rich relative to fundamentals.

• Corn: Cash corn eased to $4.27/bu in Omaha; September basis in Guymon, OK holds at +$1.10. Feed costs remain a stabilizing (if not bullish) factor for 2026.

• Slaughter: Estimated at 509,000 head last week — down 3,000 from the prior week and 28,000 below last year. Three consecutive weeks of declining kill are priming a boxed beef rebound, which began materializing Friday.

3. TOP 3 NEW DEVELOPMENTS

1. GROUND BEEF SUPPLY SQUEEZE INTENSIFIES: OSU's Derrell Peel highlights that 85% lean ground beef prices are up 60.7% since 2022 — nearly double the 26.6% gain in tenderloin. The driver: cow/bull slaughter is down 30.5% since 2022 (vs. fed slaughter down only 12.7%), starving the grinding market of lean trim just as retail demand shifts toward ground beef amid high prices. Expect ground beef premiums to remain a standout story into fall as nonfed supply stays historically tight.

2. MEXICAN BORDER REOPENING TAKING SHAPE — BUT NO FLOOD EXPECTED: The Douglas, AZ port is slated to reopen late August, with Santa Teresa, NM (the largest entry point, 500,000+ head/year) to follow. Texas A&M's David Anderson and industry sources agree the ramp-up will be gradual — Sonora and Chihuahua have received good rains, easing Mexican sellers' urgency — and imported cattle won't hit the beef case until mid-2027. Near-term price impact on U.S. fed/feeder markets should be minimal.

3. STRUCTURAL MARKET FRAGILITY WARNING: Analysts are flagging a widening disconnect between cash and futures pricing, driven by thin liquidity and industry overcapacity in both feeding and packing. Many feedlot and stocker operators are currently underwater a couple hundred dollars per head on recent purchases. Rising imports (+12%, 3.3 billion lbs through June) and falling exports (-16%, to 1.2 billion lbs) add outside pressure. The takeaway: futures are prone to sharp, news-driven swings even though cash fundamentals remain tight.

Other notable items: USDA's SPUR-backed "Product of USA" label added six more processors (Creekstone, Caviness, CS Beef, Greener Pastures, Lone Star Beef, Claxton Poultry); a promising multi-strain H5N1 vaccine for cattle showed full protection in preclinical trials at University of Nebraska; Bluetongue (BTV-3) cases are rising in England/Wales, prompting vaccination and biosecurity advisories; and USDA's Forage Production insurance now adds Revenue Protection for hay in 12 states starting with 2027 coverage.

4. OUTLOOK

Expect a seasonal lift in beef demand and box prices as Labor Day approaches and temperatures moderate — historically a bullish August pattern, though this year's levels remain below 2025 on both cash and box measures. Replacement cattle prices should stay firm to higher as drought-driven marketing delays keep auction receipts tight through late August, with the border reopening providing only a slow, limited supply offset well into 2027. Ground beef prices are likely to keep outpacing middle-meat values given the structural nonfed supply shortfall — a trend worth watching for cow-calf producers weighing culling decisions. Longer term, Texas A&M's David Anderson projects fed cattle could climb to $243-245/cwt next quarter and $250-256/cwt in 2027, with feeder calves rebounding to $459-467/cwt by Q2 2027. That said, ranchers should brace for continued margin pressure in feeding and packing sectors — losses are already showing up in close-outs, and until excess feeding/processing capacity rationalizes, cash-futures volatility and abrupt corrections remain a real risk. Keep an eye on drought conditions in the Northern and now Southern Plains, which continue to threaten pasture conditions (just 25% rated good-to-excellent, down sharply from 44% last year) and could accelerate involuntary marketing in the weeks ahead.
