DAILY CATTLE MARKET BRIEFING
October 30, 2026

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

1. MARKET SENTIMENT: CAUTIOUS / NEUTRAL, 5 out of 10

Futures and fed cash trade are weak, while the supply fundamentals and the replacement market remain strong. The short-term tone is bearish, with sharp futures losses, thin and confusing cash trade, and packers losing money. The longer-term structure is supportive. September feedlot placements and marketings were the lowest on record for the month, replacement cattle are scarce, and feeder and calf auctions are posting strong gains.

2. KEY PRICE TRENDS

Futures (CME)
- Tuesday: December live cattle slipped 0.350 to 230.750. November feeders rose 1.475 to 350.025, helped by weaker grains.
- Wednesday: December live cattle fell about 3.5 cents to 227.325. November feeders dropped 3.275 to 346.750, and January feeders fell 5.000 to 342.100. Analysts cited technical selling and a sluggish cash market.
- Lean hogs set fresh contract lows for a second session. December settled at 58.600, which adds to the negative tone across the meat complex.

Fed cash trade
- Northern live trade was around $224-225. That was steady to lower, while southern markets were higher.
- Dressed trade ranged from $350 to $365, a range so wide it gave little price direction. Some of the spread may reflect the time of day of the sales.
- Packers were short bought and used the futures drop to buy cattle lower.
- StoneX's Mike Castle noted "disappointment with how quiet cash markets have been."

Beef and packer margins
- Choice boxed beef firmed Tuesday to $373.59, then eased Wednesday to $369.71. Select was $357.14 on Wednesday.
- Packer margins have turned negative. HedgersEdge showed losses of $39.75 per head Tuesday and $18.75 Wednesday, versus profits of $34.50 to $50.15 a week earlier.
- Weekly slaughter was 546,000 head, down 7,000 from the prior week and 27,000 below last year. Plant utilization has improved, and processors had been profitable since July until this week.
- Lean beef prices are struggling against imports.
- Carcass weights are 958 lbs, up 5 lbs on the week and 12 lbs over last year. Quality grade is 87.4% Choice and Prime, near historic highs. OSU's Derrell Peel notes that year-over-year weight gains are narrowing and that weights appear to be topping out.

Feeders and replacements
- Oklahoma City feeder steers were $5-15 higher, and 600-700 lb steers were $20-30 higher. Heifers were $2-10 higher, and steer and heifer calves were $15-30 higher. Demand was very good for all classes.
- OKC West calves under 500 lbs were $10-30 higher, and calves over 500 lbs were unevenly steady. Buyers were selective on quality.
- Feeder and stocker marketings for the week ending 10/17 were 11.1% below the 3-year average.
- The spread between weaned and unweaned calves is widening and can reach $50/cwt. Health records matter more than usual this fall.

Grains
- Corn appears to have found support. The harvest is 66% complete, against 60% last week. USDA raised its yield estimate 3 bushels to 181. Guymon, OK basis is about +$1.00 over December.
- Winter wheat is 76% planted and 53% emerged.

3. TOP 3 NEW DEVELOPMENTS

1) Futures slide and thin cash trade leave hedgers exposed
December live cattle gave back more than 3 cents on Wednesday, and packers used the drop to fill short-bought needs at lower prices. Packer margins turned negative. Hedgers face a basis problem, because record-low placements could push the live cattle futures structure to a premium. Timing the lifting of hedges is harder than usual. The late-week cash trade remains opaque.

2) Record-low placements and marketings in the October Cattle on Feed report
- Feedlot inventory on October 1 was 11.4 million head, fractionally below last year.
- September placements were 1.78 million head, down 12% and the lowest for the month since the series began in 1996. September marketings were 1.52 million, down 7% and also a September record low.
- Peel notes that placements have averaged 1.656 million head per month over the past 12 months, about 200,000 head per month fewer than a year earlier.
- Feedlot inventory has held up because cattle are staying on feed longer. The marketing rate has fallen to a record low 14.0%.
- September cattle slaughter was 2.30 million head, down 7%. Beef production was down 6%.
- Feedlots are beginning to "right-size," meaning some closures, and this should continue through next year.

3) USDA moves on transparency and processing capacity
- Cash price reporting: since Monday, October 26, AMS publishes an additional negotiated cash cattle report combining Colorado, Texas, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Kansas. The report addresses the confidentiality limits caused by thin cash trade, which fell from more than 50% of transactions in 2005 to under 18% in 2025.
- Processing investment: USDA announced $57.4 million in 147 tentative awards across 40 states for independent processors, pending Congressional allotment. USDA also backed a $24.6 million loan for a producer-owned plant in Dimmitt, Texas, which would process about 400 head per day and create 220 jobs.
- Screwworm: confirmed New World screwworm detections rose to 61 cases for the week ending October 22. This remains a risk to monitor.

4. OUTLOOK

Near term (next 1-2 weeks)
- Expect continued volatility in futures and fed cash trade. Packers have leverage while margins are negative, but they cannot sustain losses for long. Short-bought needs and tight supplies should limit how far cash can fall.
- Watch for a rebound in packer margins. They would improve either if boxed beef holds near $370 or if cash cattle price falls enough.
- Producers with hedges should plan their exit points carefully, as basis uncertainty and intraday swings make timing harder.

Feeder and replacement cattle
- Fundamentals favor sellers.
